First question: Is this the correct forum for my second question? The old RAID controller failed, so I can't use it to pre-install a newer driver.
The system boots from a RAID 5 set into Server 2008 R2. The new 3ware controller is capable of reading and using the existing array, if only the newer driver existed on that array. The challenge is to install the newer driver for the newer controller on the existing array. Can you point me to a document which will step me through the procedure?
The possibilities that come to my mind is a procedure based on booting from USB into WinPE, or booting from the original install disc. Beware of unmoderated moderators in the Expression Web forums. Throw in extra spare disk into machine, remove your current boot disk, replace RAID controller, install Windows on this spare disk, update driver, see your data on RAID set, backup it to other location and proceed with experiments having safe copy and original Windows config.

This is really more a hardware problem but this one may help. I know this is an old post but I wanted to let you know that this might have saved my skin. Had a RAID controller go bad, had to buy a newer controller as a replacement, and the RAID drivers will not work to boot up Windows. There is no supported way to install RAID drivers except during Windows install, however Acronis Universal Restore does exactly that. You can run this and inject the new RAID drivers you need to boot up without having to do any kind of reinstall. You don't even need to have a previous restore available, and can simply buy it after the fact: Not sure why Microsoft doesn't include similar functionality, it would save a lot of people from major headaches.
